On 27th February, 1915 the 1st Northumberland Fusiliers battalion of 9 Brigade, 3rd Division moved into the front line south of the canal at Ypres. The following morning they came under a heavy attack resulting in many casualties especially in P Trench which was heavily bombed by advancing enemy forces. The fighting continued through into the next day, 1st March, the day on which Albert Pettitt was killed, until the battalion was relieved that evening and moved back to billets in Kruisstraat. |
